Injustice Or Just Us

Description
Lyrics
We pledge allegiance to the Flag
And the truth for which it stands.
I believed it as a boy and still believe it as a man
But liberty and justice just don’t mean the same to me these days.
We watched the trial of the century
On worldwide TV
The jury said not guilty didn’t seem that way to me
Jefferson and Adams must be turning in their graves
It’s not the truth that matters now
It’s how much you can pay
(chorus)
Is it injustice or just us
I can’t make sense of this senselessness.
When we are the jury and we are the judge
And we have the power to change what we must.
When the bad can do wrong ’cause they have their rights
And the victim seems to always pay the price.
Is it injustice or just us.
A man sits in prison
For a crime he didn’t do
And after forty years still the law won’t hear the truth.
When his DNA could make it clear
He was nowhere near the scene that day.
Meanwhile there’s a villain who swears he’ll strike again
We let him out to do it brother, I don’t understand
Why the innocent face judgment and the criminal goes free
While we’re tied up in red tape and technicalities.
(bridge)
In the court rooms of our nation
You can see that money talk
The poor man gets convicted
And the rich man gets to walk

I had this title in my head and got together with two great writers, Robin Blakeney and Bud Reneau. Talk about a marathon…we worked on this song for six months. I have never spent this much time on one song (until Bud, Robin and I got back together for our second song “Do I Love You Baby,” which is also on this CD). Whew! Well, after all the time of writing “Injustice,” we could not get anyone interested in recording it because it was too “controversial.” The timeliness of this song has faded, but let it be a reminder of what has been, so that we may learn from it…in my opinion, we haven’t learned from it. Money talks or so it seems.
